Power ON!

Posted on February 28, 2010 by WillyP

Woo Hoo! Power! We lost our electricity here late Thursday night, it just came back on about an hour and a half ago. 65 hours without electricity. Fortunately our water heater is gas powered. We had hot water and enough heat from the water heater to keep the temp downstairs at around 68f.

We had some pretty serious wind Thursday night, news reports said of the 400,000 PSNH customers, something like 350,000 of them lost power. Over a million total in the New England states!

To add a little salt to the wound, I got sick Thursday, and had a second interview for a job Friday. Had to shave in semi -dark, with a blade. I hope I get the job.

Well, I was sick all weekend and got kinda bored with no computer. I played a lot of board games with the kids, which I should do more of anyway! Does anyone play GO?

Barking Preying Mantis

Posted on February 13, 2010 by WillyP

This is a very amazing video.

Well! I didn't know a Preying Mantis could bark. As soon as I saw this, I thought 'must be Australian... they have some of the most bizarre critters down thar...' And sure enough, look what's on the screen. I wonder if the Mantis ever catches that cursor?

It's a Dog's Life

a Dog riding in a saddle bag of a motorcycle, with goggles and a windshield.

An amazing poetry of motion and sound... this all done long before computers and electronics took over. Each motion would be choreographed through a series of mechanical cams, gears and other linkages. Of course, as one commenter pointed out, it does make for a long day for the operator. I do believe these machines are more than half a century old, have been working near continuously for that long, and are ready keep pumping for another half century.

A little rearrangement of my website

Posted on February 10, 2010 by WillyP

I've just completed moving my blog from WillyP.RantThisSpace.com to RantThisSpace.com. I've set up a redirect at the old location so any links to the old location get sent here.

At the moment it is just a transfer but I have some plans to expand this. For the moment This will do, though. The wiki that was here is gone, all the good pages from it have been copied to this blog.

Stay tuned...

IE6 Rules, at ShirlsWorld.net, anyway.

I was a little surprised to see these stats (January 2010) for my wife's blog:

browser stats bar graph

Ok... who hitting Shirley's blog with IE6? My wife uses Firefox... it's not her! I guess someone didn't get the message... Friends don't let friends use IE6!

Google Dropping Suport for IE6

Official Google Enterprise Blog: Modern browsers for modern applications

Hey, it's time... or is it? On one hand, IE6's shortcomings are well known. It is time... well past time, in fact... for people to drop IE6 for a modern browser. But the fact still remains that a significant number of people still use IE6 for one reason or another.

Two schools though on this issue: one, that people do use IE6, whether by choice or whatever reason, and we don't want to push them away from our sites, or two, that IE6 sucks to accommodate and if we drop support for IE6 less people will continue to use IE6. For my sites I have found, for January 2010, IE6 usage varies from just under 5% to just over 9%. Worldwide usage has been recently reported at 15%. Personally, I think in shades, not a yes or no sorta thing. That is to say, I will continue to test in IE6, but while I won't spend a lot of time fixing minor visual anomalies for IE6, I will make sure it looks decent, and everything is functional.

Yes, it is high time to drop IE6, but not everybody can.

Remember, friends don't let friends use IE6.
